Nebraska Association of Fair Managers

The 2018 convention of the Nebraska Association of Fair Managers started with highs in the 50’s on Friday and ended Sunday with temperatures dropping and a threat of 3-10 inches of snow. The crowd of 1,015 people that arrived on Friday, dwindled to 150 by Sunday’s business meeting.  Even so, everyone agreed it was a very successful convention.

Friday’s activities kicked off with the Nebraska State Fair holding their monthly meeting where they introduced, Lori Cox, CFE; as the new Executive Director.   New this year was an afternoon workshop “Capital Improvements” for those arriving early. County Fair’s swapped information about current projects and how they were funded. The Past President’s Early Bird Reception on Friday evening gave attendee’s time to visit before six acts performed in the "Showcase of Talent".

There was something for everyone for breakfast on Saturday.  There were 38 table topics to choose from; the Associates ate together before being introduced; and the Spouses Brunch featured a program on “Jisa Farmstead Cheese”.

Saturday workshops included: An insurance panel “Are you covered?”; “Food Safety” with Nebraska Dept of Agriculture; and “Security During Your Fair".  Eight acts followed in the “Showcase of Talent”.

In the evening, the Romeo Scholarships and Past President's Scholarship winners were recognized. Joseph McDermott was thanked for his 30 years of service in the fair industry and his support of the NAFM.  Fair Person of the Year was presented to Dan Barrett of the York County Fair. The live auction followed.

With a snow storm eminent, Sunday activities were condensed.  A secretary’s workshop was held on “Entertainment Contracts”, followed by the Memorial Service honoring Fair Board members and Associates who have passed in the last year.  Key Note speaker was Jeremy Parsons with the IAFE Speakers Bureau. The business meeting was shortened with only 38 counties answering rollcall. There were 23 Fair board members who received their Years of Service award pins and 10 individuals received Outstanding Individual certificates. Two new Board of Directors were elected this year: Jackie Hladik from Valparaiso, and Gerald Frerichs from Gurley.

The 2019 Convention will be held January 18-20 at the Ramada Inn in Kearney.
